Dog feeding tray, slow feeder bowl, or lick mat: how to choose

Blue SodaPup Mandala Feeding Tray viewed from above, showing its shallow flower-shaped food pockets.

An eight-inch feeding tray and an eight-inch bowl can hold very different amounts of food. Before choosing a pattern or color, compare three things: the portion you want to serve, the food's texture, and the depth your dog can comfortably reach.

Use this practical checklist alongside our bowl-or-lick-mat overview. This guide compares the standard Mandala Feeding Tray, a deeper Honeycomb bowl, and a flat Bones mat, with an optional treat-cup idea.

1. Measure the portion before the product

Measure the amount of familiar food you plan to put in the feeder, including any toppings. Then compare it with the product's stated capacity. Capacity describes what a product holds; it is not a recommendation for how much to feed your dog.

Leave the texture and food pockets accessible rather than piling food above them. Cup capacities are approximate, and chunky kibble and spreadable food fill a shape differently. If the portion does not fit, choose a suitable larger feeder or serve an appropriate part of that portion in the accessory.

2. Match the shape to the job

A shallow tray for smaller portions

The standard Mandala Feeding Tray is about 8 inches across and 0.6 inches deep, with about a 1-cup capacity. Its shallow patterned pockets suit wet food, suitable spreads, and small kibble portions.

Compare the depth with a dish your dog already uses comfortably. Check that the portion fits and your dog can reach the grooves. This is the standard Mandala; the separately listed Mandala Soft Feeding Tray, also called Softie, is a different product with suction cups.

A deeper bowl for a larger meal

The Honeycomb Slow Feeder Bowl measures about 8 × 8 × 2 inches and holds about 4 cups. It has a similar footprint to the Mandala but much deeper sections and a larger stated capacity.

The manufacturer designs this bowl for medium to large dogs. Small dogs and dogs with short, flat faces may struggle to reach the deep sections. A larger capacity is useful only when both the portion and your dog's reach suit the bowl.

A flat mat for a thin spread

The Bones Lick Mat measures about 8 × 8 inches and is intended for a thin layer of suitable soft food. It has a flat backing without suction cups. A cup capacity is not supplied, so use it as a spreadable-snack surface rather than assuming it holds a full meal.

Want suction? Compare the attachment details of the individual mat before buying; not every lick mat has the same backing.

An optional cup for a different snack shape

The large Flower Pot Treat Cup is about 3.5 inches tall and across and holds about 3/4 cup of small kibble. Its open top offers a different shape for suitable wet food, kibble, or spreads. The manufacturer's size guidance is for dogs about 30–65 lb; check the current product details and your dog's individual fit.

3. Make the first session easy to assess

  • Use familiar, dog-safe food and an appropriate portion. Food is not included with these products.
  • Set the feeder on a stable surface and stay nearby throughout use.
  • Watch whether your dog can reach the food comfortably. Choose a different shape if the sections are out of reach.
  • Remove the accessory after the session. Bowls, trays, and lick mats are feeding accessories, not chew toys; stop use if they are chewed or damaged.

4. Choose a cleanup routine you will use

Clean after every use and check the individual care instructions. The standard Mandala tray, Honeycomb bowl, and Bones mat are top-rack dishwasher safe. The Flower Pot is dishwasher safe; follow its own placement and care directions.

Check grooves, corners, and the underside for remaining food. Inspect the item before its next use and replace it if damaged.

Your before-you-buy checklist

Portion: Does the amount you intend to serve fit? Reach: Can your dog access the food pockets? Food: Is this a kibble portion, wet meal, or thin spread? Setup: Will the base suit your surface? Care: Can you clean every section after use?
